The Roman Empire Essay -- History Rome Historical Essays
The Roman Empire In 27 BC, Augustus became the first emperor of Rome, thus creating a strong leader figure, which could shape and mold the Republic system into what was best for the empire or themselves. During the reign of the emperors, the political policies for Rome would vary according to, which emperor was in power. Not only were politics shaky, but also there never was a clear-cut method of succession for the man who controlled those politics. Rome had created the position of emperor in hopes that men like Augustus would continue to lead her into prosperity, however the office of emperor struggled in attempting to find great men to lead Rome. The office never truly evolved into something greater than when it had been created, but rather the office varied according to the personality of the man in the position. Augustus created the office of emperor with the Augustan Principate, which was ââ¬Å"to have no institutionalized authoritarian power, no perpetual dictatorship such as Julius Caesar had had himself voted early in 44, or anything like it (Stockton, 124).â⬠Despite his wishes the people of Rome ended up giving Augustus eternal office, and powers to control the Senate with the rights to dictate agendas and veto (Stockton, 128). The people of Rome had created a position of absolute power, the exact thing Augustus was attempting to prevent. At the time the people of Rome could not have realized what they were creating in the office of emperor, for Augustus was a great man whose leadership created a great shadow over the shoulder of any future emperor. Augustus would be followed by the Julio-Claudian dynasty, which reigned over the beginnings of Imperial Rome. The succession of Augustus demonstrated the diffi... ...ed in times of good fortunes, and expansion. While during times of instability the artistic ingenuity would stagnate. Finally at the end of the empire, the art quality would decrease as the empire was deteriorating. This deterioration in art quality would continue for decades until the Renaissance would bring back an art quality on the level of that of ancient Rome under the Antonines. The type of art being created could be used as a very good indicator of what the political scene in Rome looked like at the time. Works Cited 1. Raymond Briggs Essay
During the 1980s there was fear of a nuclear attack. Mass protests were held in order to prevent nuclear armament. Many politicians gave formal sermons to the public, warning them of the threat of nuclear war and the effects of the bombs. However, Raymond Briggs uses cartoon books and film to illustrate the serious message, making it more interesting, so more people take notice of it. ââ¬ËWhen the Wind Blowsââ¬â¢ follows the lives of a conventional, elderly couple in the countryside. Their names are Jim and Hilda Bloggs. The name Bloggs shows that they are very ordinary and could represent anybody. The first section of the cartoon strip shows the idyllic countryside in which the couple live. There are fluffy clouds in the sky, but at the same time these clouds are very ominous, as we later find out. These clouds soon become mushroom clouds after the bomb hits. There are bright colours filling the pages making their lives seem cheerful. The windmills in the background generate wind using the latest technology, however, this technology is what creates the bomb. Jim reads the newspaper when he arrives home and we realise that the lives shown in the newspaper are so very different compared to his and his wifeââ¬â¢s simple lives. ââ¬ËMy life isnââ¬â¢t very fast-moving or dynamic.ââ¬â¢ Jim always tries to sound intelligent but gets things wrong constantly. This makes us feel terrible pity for Jim because he is so hopeless. On the video, Jim squints quite often and Hilda always hobbles. This shows their vulnerability. The simplicity of the illustrations of Jim and Hilda is a reflection of their characters. The couple seem very warm and kind because of their round bodies. They both have rosy cheeks giving them a plump and healthy appearance as well. The endearing name, ââ¬ËDucksââ¬â¢, that Jim has for Hilda adds to their innocence. Jim and Hilda trust the government completely and think that without the official leaflets theyââ¬â¢d ââ¬Ëhave been totally non-preparedââ¬â¢. However, we know that the leaflets are just there to comfort the people, because no one can escape the radiation sickness after a nuclear bomb explosion. Their naivety shows when they seem to think that there is going to be a war and not a nuclear bomb. ââ¬ËI can soon touch it in after The Bombââ¬â¢s gone offââ¬â¢. There is some irony in their comments because, after the supposed war, they will be wiped out. During the build-up to the bomb, the lullaby ââ¬ËRock a Bye Babyââ¬â¢ plays in the background. This gives the story itââ¬â¢s title. The irony here is that, when the bomb hits, hot winds will sweep over the countryside causing mass destruction. Lullabies are usually sung to children so it makes the couple again seem innocent and naà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ve. We feel even more sympathy for Jim and Hilda when they look back at the community spirit of World War Two with nostalgia. They never seem to see the grim reality of what is happening to them. As the bomb hits, all the audience and reader can see is a bright white light. This represents the total obliteration that the bomb causes. The colours outside change from cheerful colours to ones of luridness. While Jim is reading out names of political organisations, there are strong drumbeats playing in the background, giving a threatening sense. The drums beats get louder, drowning out Jimââ¬â¢s voice, showing the nuclear war as being more important. Flashes of real-life footage also add to the threatening atmosphere and show the reality of what is happening. The names of organisations flash onto the screen then they fall apart and become distorted. This reflects Jimââ¬â¢s thoughts of the names. They mean nothing to him and, as far as he is concerned, they are just letters. The fact that they all fall apart shows that there is no safety, even from organisations set up to protect people. After the explosion, we see the inevitable 0death of Jim and Hilda. Bags start to appear round their eyes, Hildaââ¬â¢s ankles start to sag and her hair falls out. This is a very moving build-up to their death, as it shows the awful reality of the bomb. The couple have hardly any food to eat, but manage to find one fruit pastille. Their true love for each other is shown here as they cut the pastille in half, making it fair. During the aftermath of the bomb, both Hilda and Jim have fantasies. We feel sympathy for them here because their childish fantasies make them seem innocent. As the glass shatters, Hilda sees her past in the pieces of glass, which is shattered before her very eyes. This gives her character a past so we feel great pity on her, because we know she is going to die. It also seems like her life flashing before her eyes, something which people associate with the arrival of death. In both the film and book, the death of Jim and Hilda is not shown. In the book the last pages are brown, showing no hope for the couple, whereas in the film version, there is a close-up of the bunker and it rises into the sky, appearing as the sun. This gives a sense of hope, because it shows that Jim and Hilda have gone to heaven. I think that the way Raymond Briggs has used the cartoon book genre to convey a serious message works really well. It is very moving and rouses the sympathy of both reader and audience.

Privacy Is Lost Essay
Do we have privacy anymore? Some people say we have no privacy and to simply get over it. Others believe that we have really became comfortable sharing our private information with others. After considering both sides of the issue, I strongly believe that privacy is lost. For instance, a web-savvy programmer can easily infiltrate your email account, replicate the coding, and pretend to be you. In the article, ââ¬Å"Take My Privacy, Please!â⬠Ted Koppel widely discusses privacy with many examples of companies and systems designed to secure the confidential rights and private information. He presents the negative effects people who give all of their personal information to companies that may lose all of it. I really liked how the author started off his article by grabbing your attention right away. For Example, in the article it was interesting that he talked about the Onstar commercial. He reveals in a conversation between the Onstar assistant system, driver, and emergency services on how peculiar it is that they always know all of your information and exactly where you are. The reasoning for this position argument is for the general public to understand that some of their information isnââ¬â¢t so confidential. In the last part of his article he describes how many different companies lose customers valuable information. I agree with that because itââ¬â¢s odd to think that people put trust into companies with such private information. It should be mandatory that if a company loses a customers data they tell the customer right away. He knows that technology is useful, but the language he uses suggests he believes it takes advantage of the customer. Ted Koppel does a great job of structuring sentences with his tone in the article. He also does an exceptional job of highlighting how peopleââ¬â¢s privacy is invaded in everyday life. Ted Koppel has a very sarcastic tone which throws you off as you read this story. There are both aspects that I liked and didnââ¬â¢t like from the article, but it was really cool how he started off his article by grabbing your attention right away. ââ¬Å"The patriotic act- brilliant!â⬠With this, you know what he will be talking about and its good that he relates his topic to something that happened earlier in history. After you read the introduction, the structure of the rest of the essay starts to weaken. Koppel adds in a commercial that is typed up on the page. Others may agree that they really donââ¬â¢t like how he did that. He could have just described the commercial, but he instead took the time to waste space on the page. The segment of the commercial was not necessary to add. Overall, this essay did have both strong and weak points. Another thing that Koppel does well is the sentence structures that he uses in his essay that help with his tone. Every now and then he uses short abrupt transitions in the beginning of paragraphs to emphasize his thoughts that give a moment for the reader to think. Koppel uses dialogue in his article also. The dialogue that was added in the middle was very distracting and caused unnecessary line usage, but it gives people something to think about and they can relate to the commercial if theyââ¬â¢ve seen it. People will believe what he has to say and take him more seriously, even though he used sarcastic and informal tone. The tone may have cost him some of his readers, but it was a convincing argument. In my opinion Ted Koppel shows great examples to back up his thoughts. When the title, ââ¬Å"Take My Privacy, Please!â⬠is read you know right away the tone of the essay, sarcastic. This is a good title and it makes the reader more interested in reading the article. Ted Koppel has a sarcastic tone in his writing. I think that it helps make his point because it makes people think about how ridiculous technology has become. ââ¬Å"There is no end to what we will endure, support, pay for and promote if only it makes our lives easierâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This just states how we would go to such extremes and go through such struggles just as long as we benefit from it in the end. The title alone is sarcastic, ââ¬Å"Take my Privacy, Please!â⬠He sets the tone of being ironic and it lets the reader know that heââ¬â¢s not being harsh or bitter, but heââ¬â¢s trying to put an important point across.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae and Suicide In The Trenches by Siegfried Sassoon Essay
ââ¬Å"Select two of the poems you have studied. Compare and contrast the different attitudes to war expressed by the poets and the techniques used to convey them.â⬠The two poems, which I have chosen, are, ââ¬Å"In Flanders Fieldsâ⬠by John McCrae, and ââ¬Å"Suicide in the Trenchesâ⬠by Siegfried Sassoon. The poems take opposing views to the war. ââ¬Å"In Flanders Fieldsâ⬠we find McCrae taking a positive, almost religious and very sensitive view about the outcome of war. Whilst in comparison, in ââ¬Å"Suicide in the Trenchesâ⬠, Sassoon portrays a negative, harsh, cynical and angry view. ââ¬Å"In Flanders Fieldsâ⬠McCrae writes about his views on what happens after dying in war. It is a very personal poem, emphasised by being written using the personal pronouns; ââ¬Å"we and ourâ⬠, rather than impersonal; ââ¬Å"them and theirâ⬠. This involves the reader by in a way, including them in the poem. The poem also imparts a strong feeling of patriotism. McCrae uses controlled, everyday language in the poem. The rhyme is steady, and flows smoothly, which draws you into the poem, and thatââ¬â¢s what makes me like it. ââ¬Å"Between the crosses, row on rowâ⬠McCrae uses a lot of repetition. He talks of the crosses on the graves, making sure you realise that there are lots of graves, and how the poppies grow in between. He uses the poppies and the lark as a way of reminding us that we are just like a passing season, born, growing, dying, and then being replaced as nature carries on, even if we donââ¬â¢t! In the first stanza McCrae mainly describes the scene of the poem. In the second stanza, there isnââ¬â¢t enjambement like the first. McCrae uses a caesura in the first line. ââ¬Å"We are the dead.â⬠This forms a definite break. McCrae is making sure that you stop and take in what he is trying to tell you. It is strongly emphasised, abrupt, and it gets to the point. He continues with no complicated words. The language continues to be plain and simple. Again by using ââ¬Å"weâ⬠McCrae includes the reader in the feeling of dawn, seeing the sunset glow, a reference to the start and end of the day , a parody of life. McCrae then goes onto writing about how the soldiers loved, and were loved. The keywords in the sentence being ââ¬Å"wereâ⬠, telling us that they are no more. They can no longer go on loving, or fighting, and are laid to rest in Flanders Fields. In the third and final stanza, McCrae tells us they have ââ¬Å"failing handsâ⬠, means that they are losing strength. The soldiers grow weaker and weaker, then when they die they pass on the torch, symbolising responsibility, to the soldiers who are stronger. The torch of unity and hope, like the torch at the Olympic games, itââ¬â¢s symbolic. All the soldiers are being linked together, fighting for something they believe in. McCrae wants new soldiers to carry on fighting for something that they believe in, so that men, who have fought before him, havenââ¬â¢t fought in vain. They need to keep the flame in the torch alive. Then McCrae writes, ââ¬Å"The torch, be yours to hold it high.â⬠Telling us to be proud of the torch, hold it up high, be determined. The torch gives an impression of right, along with pride. Yet he almost invents this with what is almost a threat, contrasting life and death, right and wrong. For example, ââ¬Å"If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleepâ⬠, I think that McCraeââ¬â¢s attitude towards war is brave. He has hope, and thinks that you should fight for your country as your comrades have done before you. Agree with your country, and keep going till itââ¬â¢s over. Itââ¬â¢s a soldierââ¬â¢s duty to die for his country. It should be worthwhile. The poem is patriotic, and has a strong sense of purpose, but itââ¬â¢s sad, and yet dignified. ââ¬Å"Suicide in the Trenchesâ⬠is a totally different poem. Its verses are simple, they have a strong beat, the lines are rhythmical, and have regular rhyming. The poem was written in 1918, in the First World War, so Sassoon is writing about his experiences. It starts off with the phrase ââ¬Å"simple soliderâ⬠, using alliteration. The soldier is young, innocent, too young to be fighting, but it seems a pleasant poem. ââ¬Å"Who grinned at life in empty joy, means that the soldier is easily pleased, undemanding, glad with life. When it was dark, and lonesome, the soldier slept through it, happily, he was untroubled, and had nothing to worry about. He got up at the crack of dawn, as the lark does. He was cheerful. This is like a childââ¬â¢s impression of war. That a soldier is brave, and not afraid of anything. The second stanza says that in winter, the trenches are full of rain, snow, and conditions are bad. The young soldier feels cowed and glum, to be ââ¬Å"cowed downâ⬠, means subdued. This tells us that he has no spirit left, his spirit has all gone. All the joy in his life has been taken away. ââ¬Å"With crumps and liceâ⬠crumps are bursting bombs, warfare, the trenches are lice infested. There is a lack of rum. The soldiers are issued with rum for courage, before they go out and fight, they have some, itââ¬â¢s a way of keeping their spirits up, but there is even a lack of rum too! The poem is getting more and more angry. In the same stanza, Sassoon writes, ââ¬Å"He put a bullet through his brain.â⬠This has a harsh simplicity. We are shocked by what Sassoon is writing. This once so pleasant, and untroubled boy, has now found this so hard, that he has taken his own life. It is very abrupt, and comes out of the blue. ââ¬Å"No one spoke of him again.â⬠All his fellow soldiers are ashamed of what he did to himself. He left them, and didnââ¬â¢t have to courage to go on. It was a shameful, and easy way out. But it was out of shock and horror that he killed himself. I think that also people were ashamed of themselves for not helping him, and that he had to do it as a way out. He felt he had no other option. The third stanza becomes more general. It stops being so personal. We begin to feel what the writer feels, very bitter and angry towards war. All the people at home, were thinking they knew everything about the war, when they didnââ¬â¢t have to go through what the soldiers were going through. They didnââ¬â¢t have any experience of the reality of war. They dress up the war and the truth is hidden. They are ââ¬Å"Smugâ⬠, self-satisfied people, who will send other people off to war, but wouldnââ¬â¢t go themselves. ââ¬Å"Kindling eyeâ⬠is a way of pointing out their excitement, getting a fire going, that they are lit up with enthusiasm for war, which they wont fight. The people are hiding away from what the soldiers have to do. War is hell. War has taken away all the soldierââ¬â¢s youth and laughter goes. There is no laughter in war. The men donââ¬â¢t get to live their youth, and have to fight, and kill. The two poems are therefore totally different, but they have the same structure. The both have three stanzas, and have generally got a steady beat throughout. They have opposite meanings. They both start off pleasant, and ââ¬Å"Flanders Fieldsâ⬠stays that way, it is sad but with a positive outlook on the way. But Sassoonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Suicide in the trenchesâ⬠changes abruptly and becomes very negative. They both talk about death, but in totally opposite ways, ââ¬Å"In Flanders Fieldsâ⬠says it is worth dying for your country, and what you believe in. But on the other hand, ââ¬Å"Suicide in the Trenchesâ⬠says it isnââ¬â¢t worth going through the hell of war, and losing your life for nothing. They are both very personal poems, even though Sassoonââ¬â¢s becomes less personal towards the end. Both the poets have lived through war, and both the poems were written in the same year, during WW1. Both the poems have simple, easy to understand, everyday language.

Main Issues surrounding women in Sports Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Main Issues surrounding women in Sports - Essay Example However, there is also a belief that these screwed up views of female athletes are actually coming to an end in the 21.st century. One of the main issues that surround these female athletes is the way that these athletes are portrayed as sex objects instead of athletes in the media. The athletes prowess in the sport is often swept under the rug because they would rather present the women in an ambivalent light. Thereby not threatening the male athlete counterpart in terms of game knowledge and skill. If possible, these women are pictured as the girl next door or hyper-heterosexual in order to reinforce the traditional female roles of daughter, girlfriend, wife, and mother. But of all of these presentations, the worst two have to be the sexy babe and soft- porn images as depicted in the cover and article photo layouts in sports magazines. There is only one reason as to why the female sports players are presented in this manner and it has everything to do with gender equality and sexual orientation dynamics. For centuries, women have been viewed as the weaker sex and therefore, the second class citizens in their countries. Their influence in society is often limited by economic, social, and political institutions thereby suppressing the media images of women that do not depict them in anything more than feminine or sexual. The need to present women in a non-threatening manner to men (non-sports activity related) is the medias way of assuring those who may be affected by the female athletes success, that a woman can be athletic and excel in her sport of choice and yet remain traditional and fulfill her obligations as expected by society when not actively participating in her sport. Another problem faced by female athletes in their media portrayal is related to the nouns used to describe their mindset while in competition. Whereas men are introduced as young men or young men in order to

Ethical issues in Health Care Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Ethical issues in Health Care Management - Essay Example The latter increasingly take into account what are the ethical norms within the healthcare institution, because ethical considerations affect the commercial and corporate world. Stakeholders seek to maximize the profit and return on their investments and that is why they are particularly concern of ethical codes being correctly applied. Avoiding negative social effects in healthcare management is an activity, which is open and socially responsible. Stakeholders aim to minimize the ethical issues in health institutions because this affects sustainability of the organizations and destroys the bond between the local community and the healthcare system there. Therefore, following strictly the chosen ethical code increases the communityââ¬â¢s confidence in the healthcare and secures its population with greater tolerance, compassion, awareness and flexibility. Ethical codes in healthcare institutions posses substantial advantage for the heath corporation, because society can anticipate certain behaviour and create public ethical expectations. Such are very helpful to the stakeholders, who run financially the system and invest in its technological improvements, research and development. Ethical codes and law go hand in hand in healthcare management, and stakeholders have to be aware of unethical/unlawful actions being taken. An example where ethics and law clash is the dumping of patients, namely in the US, where the healthcare system and social and medicare is designed in a way that do not fully covers the ethical presumptions of health institutions. In such cases I believe, stakeholders have the take decisions, which are rather patient abiding, than law
